The American Aero Services four year reconstruction, Dixie Boy, is judged best P-51 Mustang and receives the Silver Wrench Award at Sun-n-Fun 2010. Dixie Boy, piloted by owner Selby Burch, of Winter Garden, Florida, arrived at Sun-n-Fun Tuesday morning. The restoration team of Steve Marquis, Linda Tam and Tom Walker gave Dixie Boy one more polishing. On Wednesday morning Linda and Tom opened the aircraft to allow the judges access to the restoration details. Judging took place Wednesday afternoon.
The now beautiful Mustang arrived by trucks at the American Aero Services facility as a collection of crumpled parts in July of 2005 and made it’s first test flight on November 6, 2009.
“Literally every part of the aircraft had to be reconstructed,” Selby explained in discussing the award, “many of the parts were simply unsalvageable and had to be recreated. I came to American Aero because I knew they had the expertise and experience to do the job right. This award is proof that we made the right choice!”
